Call of Duty®: Black Ops 4 “Blood of the Dead” Easter Egg Guide

It’s important to note that before you start completing the Blood of the Dead Easter Egg, it is highly recommended that you complete the Easter Egg in the following order, as it will save you a bunch of running around in the future.
Before you begin completing any major step of the Easter Egg, there are a number of prerequisites that need to be completed in order to progress. To make things simpler and essentially as smoothly as possible, we will begin to collect all of the objects and tasks needed for the Easter Egg.
It is worth noting that during waves 1 to 17, you cannot complete the main Easter Egg, giving you plenty of time to work on obtaining the list of items below.

  • The Spectral Shied
  • The Pack-a-Punch
  • The Hell’s Retriever
  • The Blundergat
  • The Spoon
  • Upgrading To The Magmagat (Optional)
  • Upgrading To The Golden Spork (Optional)
  • Upgrading To The Attuned Spectral Shield (Optional)
As mentioned above, it is highly recommended that up until round 17, you should be spending your time obtaining the Spectral Shield, the Hell’s Retriever, the Blundergat, the Spoon, and also the Pack-a-Punch.
While there are options to further upgrade each of these items further, it is only really recommended that you spend the time and effort on the Magmagat, Golden Spork, and the Attuned Spectral Shield. However, doing so is completely optional.
In order to unlock the Pack-a-Punch, you are going to need to complete the following steps:
  • Build the Zombie Shield
  • Obtain the Afterlife Essence
  • Obtain the Warden’s Key
  • Obtain the Shield
  • Turn On The Power
  • Power the Zombie Shield
  • Charge the Pack-a-Punch machine

Step #1: How To Turn On The Power In Blood of the Dead

In order to first build the Zombie Shield, you are going to need to turn on the power.
The first Power Switch can be found by unlocking the following rooms in order. If you are unsure of your current location, be sure to always check the top left corner of your screen where you will find the name of your current location displayed in white writing.
Power Switch One: Richthofen’s Laboratory > Model Industries > West Grounds > Power House.
Upon entering the Power House, you will find the first Power Switch in the top left corner of the room. This will be illuminated by a light and can be found right next to a large sign that reads ‘Lights Out’.

Turning on the second Power Switch can be a little tricky though, as there are a number of rooms that you will need to unlock in order to get to the switch. Simply unlock the following rooms in the order below to find the second Power Switch.
Power Switch Two: Catwalk > Recreative Yard > Cell Block Entrance > D-Block > C-D Street > Cell Block 3rd Floor > Michigan Avenue > Citadel > Citadel Tunnels > China Alley > Building 64.

Upon entering Building 64, you will find the second Power Switch located in the small far right room. In this room, there will be three switches and the floor will read ‘No One Escapes’.
Once you have turned on both of the Power Switches, a heavy enemy will spawn nearby called ‘The Warden’. You must kill The Warden in order to obtain the Warden’s Key, the key will be dropped by The Warden following his death and will glow bright blue.

his key will not only allow you to access specific areas of the map, but you will also use the key to charge up the Zombie Shield by sucking the souls out of zombies.

Step #2: How To Build The Zombie Shield In Blood of the Dead

In order to build the Zombie Shield, you will need to collect three different parts.

Part 1: Obtaining the Afterlife Essence

To make the process of building the shield easier, obtaining the Afterlife Essence is usually best to be collected first, as in most cases you will pass at least one of its three different spawn locations while traversing the map to complete other steps of the Pack-a-Punch. It is also important to note that all Afterlife Essence’s will be located on a red electrical box inside the Prison building.
Here are the three different locations that the Afterlife Essence may spawn in Blood of the Dead.Location #1: Located within Time’s Square, you can find the Afterlife Essence on the wall – near the stairs leading to the Showers – right next to the Auger DMR wall-buy. Time’s Square is located just off of the Cafeteria.

Location #2: Located in Michigan Avenue, outside of the Warden’s Office and directly beneath the Michigan sign.
Location #3: Located within the Library, you will find the Afterlife Essence right next to the doorway entrance.

Part 2: Obtaining the Shield in Blood of the Dead

The Zombie Shield can be found in the three different locations below.
Location #1: Located in the Citadel Tunnels, you will find the shield leaning against a wire and corrugated iron fence, not far from the locked elevator as you begin to walk down the winding staircase.Location #2: As you exit the Citadel Tunnel staircase doorway, you will find the shield just to your left, leaning against a wall right next to a large pile of skulls. This is located just before you leave the Citadel Tunnels to lead into China Alley.

Location #3: Located right next to the Zombie spawn in China Alley, you will find the shield leaning against the alley wall.

Part 3: Obtaining the Warden’s Key

To obtain the Warden’s Key, you will need to kill the Brutus Boss Zombie in order to receive the key as a drop.

It is worth noting that the mini boss zombie will only spawn after activating both of the Power Switch. You can find our complete guide on turning the power on in Part 1 of our guide.

Step #3: How To Assemble The Zombie Shield

Once you have collected all three of the parts above, head on over to a workbench to assemble the Zombie Shield. Workbench locations are as follows:

Location #1: Located at the Docks, you will find the workbench located just to the left of the door when exiting Building 64.
Location #2: Located on Cell Black 3rd Floor, a workbench can be found to your left when heading towards the Gondola, along a wall of corrugated iron.

Step #4: How To Power The Zombie Shield in Blood of the Dead

With the Zombie Shield ready to go, along with the Warden Key, it is now time to head to the Roof. While you can simply keep heading higher up into Prison until you reach the Roof, you can also follow the order of rooms below.
How To Get To The Roof: Cell Block 3rd Floor > Infirmary > Roof
In order to power up the Zombie Shield, you will need to drain the souls from at least three to five zombies. This can be done by using L1 / LB to aim with the shield, followed by L2 / RT to use the shield’s special Soul Blast attack.
It’s important to note though, if you happen to take too much damage while you are carrying the Zombie Shield (check the shields health bar on the HUD), it will be destroyed and you will need to head back to the workbench to obtain another one.
Once you have drained the essences from the required amount of zombies, the key will begin to glow bright blue. It is now time to activate the Punch-a-Punch machine.

Step #5: How To Activate The Punch-a-Punch In Blood of the Dead

Now that you have reached the roof and have successfully charged the Soul Key, use L1 / LB to aim with the shield, followed by L2 / RT to use the shield’s special Soul Blast attack on the Voltmeter to activate the Pack-a-Punch machine.

In order to obtain Hell’s Retriever, you will need to locate three flaming Hellhounds that will spawn around the map.
As you find each Hellhound, you must kill Zombies one at a time in the surrounding area in order to feed it. Once the Hellhound has howled, it will disappear, meaning you were successful.
You can find the three Hellhounds at the following locations:

Cell Block 2nd Floor: Located directly in the middle of all the cell blocks in the Cell Block 2nd Floor area.
New Industries: Located just to the right of the spawn building, you will find New Industries. The Hellhound will be found at the back left corner of the building. New Industries is located just by the West Grounds and the Power House.

Warden’s Office: Located in the outdoor area of the Warden’s Office, you will find the Hellhound hanging on the wall of a house. You can find the Hellhound by going through Michigan Avenue, followed by Sully Port and Administration. You will then need to go through the Warden’s Office and into the outside area. Upon entering the outside area, you will see the Hellhound spawned on the wall of a house, directly outside the Warden’s Office building.
Once you have successfully filled each Hellhound, head to the Warden’s House.Towards the back of the house, you will find a fast travelling system that will take you to the Showers. As you teleport, you will be taken underground and will see the Hell’s Retriever floating in the middle of the travel path, above a rock.  Hold down interact as you pass by it and you will pick it up.
Once you have obtained the Hell’s Retriever and Spectral Shield, you can now obtain the Blundergat.
It’s important to note, that the Blundergat can be bought via the Mystery Box. However, the chances of receiving it is very slim.
In order to obtain the Blundergat though, you will need to find five invisible skulls. While the skulls may be invisible, they can be seen with the Spectral Shield by pressing L2/LT, where they will glow a blueish tinge.
Once located, throw your Hell’s Retriever at each skull to collect them. The skulls can be found at the following locations:
  • Skull One – West Grounds: Located to the left of the spawn building, you can find a skull hidden on the balcony, right beside a door.
  • Skull Two – C-D Street: Located on C-D Street, just as you make your way up the makeshift stairs. You can find the skull within a cell, sitting on top of a toilet.
  • Skull Three – Roof: Located on the roof, you can find the skull sitting on top of a bunch of boxes that are off into the distance, on the right side of the pack-a-punch machine.
  • Skull Four – Docks: Located at the Docks, you can find the Skull on the third pylon from the left.
  • Skull Five – Eagle Plaza: Located in the same area as the Hellhound from the Hell’s Retriever, you can find skull sitting on top of a telephone pole in Eagle Plaza, which is located right next to the Warden’s Office.
Once you have found all Five Skulls, the Blundergat will be waiting for you on top of the table in the Warden’s Office.
To obtain the Spoon, the player will require the Spectral Shield and Hell’s Retriever in order to unlock the Spoon.
With both items ready, players will need to use the Shield’s vision ability to find three numbers that can be seen on the Office’s pillars.Once you have found the three numbers, take note of them from the closest to farthest and the order in which they appear. Begin to make your way to the Number Pad that is located in the Citadel Tunnels and blast it with your Spectral Shield’s ability. Now you can input the numbers.

With the numbers entered, the elevator will now begin to drop down.
With the elevator in motion, head towards the Voltmeter that is located at the Docks. Use your Spectral Shield to blast the Voltmeter, which will in turn activate the crane.Once the crane has finished positioning itself, throw the Hell’s Retriever at the skeleton that is inside the fishing net. The skeleton will drop the Spoon onto of a wooden crate, that is located right on the edge of the Docks. Simply pick up the Spoon and you will now have your new weapon.
efore you begin, it is worth noting that this step is completely optional and is not required to complete the main Easter Egg.
To complete the following step you will require the following item: Blundergat.
In order to get the Magmagat, you will need to take your Blundergat and place it in the fireplace at the back of the Warden’s House. The fireplace shouldn’t be located too far from the Warden’s table that you used to collect the Blundergat.

Upon placing the Blundergat into the fireplaceZombies will begin to spawn. Stay inside the house and begin to kill them and collect the essence they drop. Once all three skulls above the mantle have lit up, place the essences of the Zombies you just killed into the skulls. The fireplace will then light up blue and the Blundergat will respawn.
Before you go picking up the Blundergat, be prepared for the next step, as it will start a time trial. During this trial you will need to interact with six different barrels that are place all around the map at the following locations:
  • Barrel One: Eagle Plaza
  • Barrel Two: Michigan Avenue
  • Barrel Three: Times Square
  • Barrel Four: Recreation Yard,
  • Barrel Five: West Grounds
  • Barrel Six: New Industries
Once you are ready, grab the Blundergat and make your way outside the house to the Eagle Plaza, where you will find a barrel with blue flames. Interact with the barrel and you will replenish its flames. Repeat this step for all of the above barrels. If you happen to fail the challenge, you will be required to start over.

Now that you have found all of the barrels, place your Tempered Blundergat in the compactor that is located in the New Industries.
After a short amount of time, your Blundergat will have finally upgraded to the Magmagat.
Before you begin, it is worth noting that this step is completely optional and is not required to complete the main Easter Egg.
To complete the following step you will require the following items: Acid Gat / Magmagat, Hell’s Retriever, and the Spoon.
Once you have all of the required items, make your way to the Infirmary and place your Spoon into the bathtub. Head to the Roof and begin to kill zombies with either the Acid Gat or Magmagat. This will cause the bathtub below to fill with blood. After every round, check the bathtub to see when it has completely filled.

Once the bathtub is full of blood, interact with it to drain the blood. The Spoon that you had place in there earlier will no longer be there.
With the Spoon now gone, head to the middle section of the Catwalk and look out towards the water tower. Throw the Hell’s Retriever towards the bottom of the water tower. If thrown correctly, the it will retrieve the Golden Spork.
Before you begin, it is worth noting that this step is completely optional and is not required to complete the main Easter Egg.
To complete the following step you will require the following items: Spectral Shield, Warden’s Key, and the Hell’s Retriever.
Upgrading the Spectral Shield is arguably one of the easiest tasks in the Blood of the Dead Easter Egg. To upgrade the shield into the Attuned Spectral Shield, simply use the Mystery Box until you see a lock appear as one of the rewards.Use your Spectral Shield and the Warden’s Key to drain the essence from the lock. Once the lock is blue, throw the Hell’s Retriever at the lock and in return your Spectral Shield will now be upgraded into the Attuned Spectral Shield.

Once you have obtained the Spoon, you will need to head to the Warden’s House, and melee the wall that is above the steps. This will place scratches on the wall, which will be used later in this step.

Once round 17 comes along, head to the Number Pad in the Citadel Tunnels and enter the code “666”. This will force a Brutus Zombie to spawn in the world.

You must now lure Brutus to the walls that were previously scratched in the Warden’s House.

Upon luring Brutus up the stairs of the Warden’s House, he will perform a special EMP attack that will open up a secret room, the Warden’s Ritual Chamber.

Inside this room, you will find a body that is draped with a cloth. You will then want to interact with the small red stone that can be found on the nearby desk within the room.

Once you have picked up the stone, interact with the lever, which will reveal the body to be the corpse of the Warden.

Now that you have collected the stone, make your way to Richtofen’s Lab, where you will need to place the red stone on the map that is located on the left wall of the Lab.

Once you have placed the stone on the map, the Kronorium will now spawn in the right most corner of the room. Interact with the book and it will spawn a glowing blue bird that will steal the Kronorium.

For the next four rounds you will be tasked with finding the bird once every round. Unfortunately though, finding the bird every round is no easy task, as you can only see and hear the bird by using your Shield’s vision ability and listening to the audio cues to track it’s location. The closer you are to the bird, the louder the sound will be.

You can find a complete guide to all of the bird’s possible locations below:
  • Catwalk – Above entrance
  • Cell Block – Electric Cherry
  • Cell Block – Below the Hellhound location, on the Monkey Bomb Statue
  • Citadel Tunnels – Downstairs from Warden’s Office
  • Citadel Tunnels – Near the Hanging body that is just right of Number Pad
  • Citadel Tunnels – Number pad
  • Citadel Tunnels – Sandbags
  • Citadel Tunnels – Walkway alongside the Power room near the left barrier
  • Docks – Perk Machine
  • Library – On the top shelf with Radio
  • Michigan Avenue – On the voltmeter opposite the Warden’s Office
  • Recreation Yard – On top of the pillar
  • Richtofen’s Laboratory – On The Second Floor
  • Roof – Doorway
  • Showers – Washing Machine
  • Times Square – Above the entrance to the Cafeteria
  • Warden’s Office – Doorway
  • Warden’s Office – On the outside, in the corner of the balcony.
  • Warden’s Office – On top of the fireplace
  • West Grounds – On top of the truck
Once you find the bird, you will want to use your Shield’s Spirit Blast ability to attack the bird. You will need to repeat this step three times. On the fourth attack, you will also find an orb alongside the bird. Don’t attack it just yet though.
Instead of hearing bird noises though, you will now hear a sobbing noise that is coming not too far from the Number Pad.

Head to the Number Pad and input the code “872” to spawn a Zombie Blood Pack.
Head back to the area with the bird and orb and instead of using the shield, use the Hell’s Retriever to hit the bird. In return, you will receive the Kronorium back in your inventory.

Once you have the Kronorium, head back to the Warden’s Ritual Chamber and place it on the body sitting in the chair.

This will cause a cutscene to play. Once finished, use your Shield to see the three numbers that are listed on the page. Make a note of these numbers and then import them into the Number Pad to trigger one of five different random events.
Once you have done this, the lighthouse will point towards the direction in which you must head. The location of each of the five challenges can be seen below:
  • The Docks
  • The Powerhouse
  • The Showers
  • New Industries
  • Michigan Avenue.
In order to start each of the five challenges you will need to head towards the area in which the lighthouse is lighting up and use the Shield to blast the area. If you have done this correctly, a red portal will spawn in the area.
Should you fail one of the challenges, you will be required to start again by getting a brand new set of numbers, entering it on the Number Pad, and then trying the failed challenge again.

In this challenge, you will find a ghost playing the banjo. Interact with the ghost in order to the take the banjo.

The player that took the banjo must and head to the circle that has just appeared in the area. It is important that you get as many kills as possible within the circle while it is active.

It’s important that the player holding the banjo keeps an eye on their health, as after 90 seconds, the banjo will begin to drain their health.
Once the circle has finished, give the banjo back to the Zombie and proceed to gather the red stone that spawns on the ground, right next to where the Zombie is standing.
For this challenge, you will be required to escorting a Zombie to specific location. Firstly, once you have activated the challenge, head to the Cafeteria and kill one Zombie. Use your Shield Vision and then Spirit Blast the area.
Now that you can see the Zombie, help escort it from the Cafeteria, all the way to the portal that is located in Michigan Avenue.
Once it reaches the port, the Zombie will drop a red stone that you will need to collect.

The Docks challenge will require the use of Morse Code. Head to the Warden’s Office in Sully Port, where you will find a Morse Code machine. You must listen to the code coming from the lighthouse and input it into the machine.

It is worth noting that Long blinks are represented as dashes, while the short blinks are represented as dots.
To input the response into the machine, a dot can be inputted by holding the button for half a second. A Dash is created by holding down for more than three seconds. The code that you will need to input is anywhere from 4 to 17 characters long.
If you happen to make a mistake, the Warden will laugh, whereas your character will speak if you were successful. This challenge is all about trial and error, with many often just guessing the pattern. With the code complete, head towards the Infirmary and get a single Zombie kill. As a result, it will spawn a ghost Zombie, in which you will need to Spirit Blast him in order to stop him from moving. Have everyone interact with the Zombie and then kill other Zombies in close range in order to charge it. This will cause the Zombie to follow a member of your team. With the Zombie following, take him down the Gondola and to the Dock Portal.Don’t forget to collect the red stone again, which the Zombie dropped exactly where it standing.
This particular challenge is essentially just a big game of Simon Says in the Power House.
The first step to this challenge is to follow the blinking lights. Simply touch the lights one by one in the order that they blink. The last round will have five lights to follow, so be prepared with pen and paper if you think you might struggle to remember the entire sequence.Once you have completed that sequence, four new lights will turn back on. This time, you will want to make note of the three lights that are on and not the light that is blinking. Head towards each generator and make a note of each symbols that corresponds with the three completely lit lights.Next you will want to pick up the card that is located on a nearby table in the room.

You will now want to take this card to the West Grounds and insert it into one of their machines.
This will turn all of the monitors, which will begin to cycle through different symbols. Simply find the monitor that is displaying your symbols, and note down the new ones that have now been added to fight among your list. With everything written down, head back to the Power House where you will spot a Ghost altering the levers by using your Shield’s Vision ability. Check the stations that the Ghost is working on and use your Shield to blast them just as they are on their way to the lever / station that does not match your symbols.Do this for all three symbols and collect the red stone upon the Ghost dropping it.
Once this challenge has been activated, head towards D Block and once again kill a Zombie. This will turn the Zombie into a vindictive ghost that needs to be stopped.
It is highly recommended that you take on this task with maximum health, full shield and the maximum amount of shield blasts as possible. It is also important to not attempt this challenge half way through a zombies round. It is also recommended that if you are playing as a team, have a team member round up Zombies in the the cafeteria. To stop the Zombie, begin to drain it’s energy by standing in front of him constantly, to ensure you are successfully draining his health.

You will need to blast the zombie approximately 8-10 times in order to see his health completely deplete. Once his health has been completely depleted, walk the Zombie to the New Industry area. Once inside the area, you must kill the Zombie with the trap that is located directly in the center of the room.
Once the Zombie is dead, don’t forget to grab the red stone.

Now that you have completed all of the challenges, you will want to take all five red stones and place them on the map in Richtofen’s Laboratory.

With all five stones on the map, head back to the Warden’s Ritual Room. By standing by the corpse, you will trigger the electrocution of the body. After the electrocution, the summoning key will spawn, followed by a cutscene that will also begin to play.
After the cutscene, you will be freed by the bird from your cell, where you will also find a bag on the ground, containing all of your weapons and equipment etc.

You will now need to follow the bird back to the laboratory, where you will see a cutscene. Afterwards, be sure to grab the final stone that has appeared on the ground as a drop by the Warden.
Place the final stone on the map and you will be presented with a brand new area. This area will open the door to the final boss fight.
This particular boss fight isn’t too challenging as you will be required to kill waves of Zombies and Hellhounds until the Warden spawns.Once the Warden arrives, you will need to stay in the red areas of the map and shoot at the orbs.

Once the orbs have been brought down, you will want to Spirit Blast the Warden and the orbs on top of the machine in the middle. You must repeat this step three separate times.
On the final stage of the battle, Richtofen will be required to activate the machine to sit in it. Have Richtofen return to the boss area to stand with the rest of the team.
That’s all we have for the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blood of the Dead walkthrough.
